Is Blonde Espresso Stronger Than Regular Espresso?

Aaron James · February 2, 2023 · Leave a Comment

Do you love the taste of espresso but sometimes find it to be too harsh?

If so, blonde espresso might be perfect for you. Traditional espresso is made by forcing boiling water at high pressure through finely-ground coffee beans. Blonde espresso is another variety of espresso made in the same way, however, lighter roast coffee beans are used.

Is Blonde Espresso Stronger Than Standard Espresso?

Does Blonde Espresso Have More Caffeine?

Although blonde espresso has a smoother, milder taste than espresso made with dark roast beans, blonde espresso can sometimes contain more caffeine than traditional espresso. Due to the shorter roasting process, blonde espresso beans may retain more of their caffeine.

Each shot of Starbucks blonde espresso contains 85mg of caffeine, compared to 75mg of caffeine in a signature espresso shot.

So if you are wondering is Blonde Espresso stronger, the answer most times is YES.

Blonde Espresso Vs. Regular Espresso

Blond espresso is made from coffee beans that have been roasted for a shorter time than regular espresso coffee beans. The lighter-colored beans used for blond espresso produce a smoother, mellower flavor due to the shorter roasting time.

When compared to standard espresso, blonde espresso is slightly less bitter. As such, it’s a great option for days when you’re feeling like a mild, smooth shot of espresso.

Blonde espresso will appear slightly lighter in color than traditional espresso. You’ll notice this before brewing by observing the lighter-colored coffee beans.

After brewing, your espresso will also appear lighter in color.

How to Drink Blonde Espresso Vs Regular

Blonde Espresso can be enjoyed in all of the same ways traditional espresso is used. Coffee lovers can enjoy blonde espresso in shot form or use blonde espressos to make classic espresso drinks such as:

  • Americano (hot or iced) made with water and blonde espresso shots
  • Latte (hot or iced) made with blonde espresso shots, steamed milk, and milk foam
  • Macchiato, made with equal parts blonde espresso and steamed milk
  • Double blonde espresso shot

The discovery of blonde espresso gives you dozens of new combinations to try with your favorite coffee drinks.

Although Starbucks is a popular place to order blonde espresso nationwide, you may also find more and more local coffee shops offering blonde espresso.

At Starbucks

Note: At Starbucks, blonde espresso is the same price as traditional espresso shots. When ordering from the Starbucks mobile app, hit “customize” to select blonde espresso.

As with traditional espresso, Starbucks allows drinks to be customized with ⅓ or ½ decaf espresso too (however, decaf espresso is not available in the blonde variety).

Will Blonde Espresso Become your New Favorite?

If you’re a coffee lover, you owe it to yourself to give the popular blonde espresso a shot. (No pun intended!)

Whether you make blonde espresso at home with an espresso maker or try it out at Starbucks or your favorite local shop, it’s certainly worth a try.

Experiment with blonde espresso on its own or in your typical espresso beverages to find your favorite.

Sit back, relax, and enjoy a smooth and mild sip!
